How Our Sprinkler Winterization Works

  1. Shut Off & Isolate. We turn off your irrigation water and isolate the backflow/preventer.
  2. Connect Air. We attach a compressor and regulate pressure appropriate for sprinkler components.
  3. Blow Out Zones. We cycle each zone until mist clears and heads run dry, including drip lines.
  4. Drain & Set Controller. We drain the backflow, leave valves partially open, and set your controller for winter with notes.

Note: Winterization removes water ahead of freezing weather. It’s not a full spring tune‑up; minor issues can still surface at startup. We’re happy to address those during spring start‑up service.

Winterization FAQs

When should I schedule my sprinkler blowout in the Pointes?
Most homeowners book between late September and early November. Lake‑adjacent properties can see colder overnight temps sooner, so early October (or earlier) is safest for waterfront streets.
How long does a visit take?
Typical Pointes homes (6–8 zones) take ~20–30 minutes once connected. Larger estates or systems with many beds/valves may take longer.
Do I need to be home?
Not required if we have access to the controller and connection point/backflow. Please unlock gates, provide any alley/gate codes, and ensure valve boxes aren’t buried under leaves.
Do you handle lake‑pump systems along Lake St. Clair?
Yes. Pump systems are a common add‑on in the Pointes. Our pump add‑on is +$50 (in addition to the standard winterization) and includes draining the pump, protecting prime, and blowing out the intake/irrigation lines where accessible.
Is compressed air safe for my irrigation system?
Yes. We use a regulated compressor and short bursts within safe ranges for residential components. We run each zone until only fine mist/air is present, which indicates the line is clear.
Do you include drip zones and the backflow?
Yes. Drip/micro zones are included, and we drain/isolate the backflow assembly for winter.
What if a zone won’t come on?
We’ll attempt a quick check (common issues: stuck valve/solenoid, wiring, or a closed isolation valve). If it needs more time, we’ll tag it and recommend a spring tune‑up/repair.
Does winterization guarantee no spring leaks?
Winterization removes water to prevent freeze damage, but it isn’t a full inspection. Hidden issues can still show up at spring start‑up—especially on older heads/valves. We offer spring tune‑ups to address anything we find.
How should I prep before you arrive?
Know where the controller and connection/backflow are, unlock gates, keep pets inside, and clear access to valve boxes. For lake pumps, ensure we can reach the pump and intake access.
How do I book, and which Pointes do you cover?
Use Schedule Online or call (313) 992‑9900. We service Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Park, Woods, Shores, plus nearby Harper Woods and St. Clair Shores.

Pricing reference: Standard winterization is $75. Pump systems are + $50 as an add‑on.
